Hankow D29 covers and postcards (update 2007)

The original study by Frank Drake et al on this subject was published in Hong Kong Philatelic Society Journal 10. Since then, another 3c postal card (lot 837) was sold in Spink London auction on 10 March 2005. This postcard (#12) is dated 4 October 1880 from Hankow to Bordeaux, France. According to our record, this is the earliest example without the addition of S1. Another cover dated 20 October 1877 with a QV12c canceled blue D29 (faint) overstruck by black S1 from Hankow to Ireland from an old Hong Kong collection and this is now the earliest D29 by record. We have now recorded 15 covers and postcards. If you know of any more, please let us know so that we can amend our record.

(a) In HKSC 233 para. 26 (ii) Capt. La Pierre reported and illustrated this card showing the Hankow c.d.s. with the adhesive cancelled S1. But from contemporary examples, all had D29 + S1, the D29 is often very faint.
