ABOUT THE HONG
KONG PHILATELIC SOCIETY
Established in 1921,
the Hong Kong Philatelic Society is the oldest philatelic organisation in Hong Kong.
Members were mainly Europeans before the war and after 1946, more and more Chinese became
members and the Society has grown in stature. Currently, the Philatelic Society has over
350 local and overseas members.
Formed to promote philatelic activities in
Hong Kong, the Philatelic Society once contributed a column in the South China Morning
Post in the 1930s reporting on both local and foreign philatelic activities and
developments. In the 1960s, it began holding open competitive exhibitions locally and
published a monthly newsletter. The first annual journal of the Hong Kong Philatelic Society was
inaugurated in 1997 and it is now into the 12th issue. We meet every month on
Thursday evening and holds postal auctions regularly. Ever since the 1970s, monthly
meetings of the Philatelic Society were held at the Club Lusitano in Central and from 1998
onwards, the Philatelic Society has a new club house and library at 186 Hennessy Road,
Wanchai. The www.hkpsoc.com website was innaugurated in August 2000 providing a quicker
means of philatelic information exchange between members. Because of proliferation of philatelic
forgeries worldwide, we have formed a watchdog group made up of knowledgeable members in
order to monitor and to advise members and the stamp trade regarding fakes and forgeries
in the market.
The Hong Kong
Philatelic Society is one of the founder member of the Federation of Inter-Asian Philately
(founded on 14 September 1974) and a member of the Federation Internationale Philatelie
(F.I.P.).
Locally, our Philatelic
Society is active in promoting stamp collecting as a hobby as well as raising local
standard of exhibiting by supporting Hongkong Post organised Inter-School Stamp Exhibits
Competition.
In December 2002, our
Philatelic Society together with the Hong Kong Study Circle (U.K.) organised the 140th
Anniversary of Hong Kong Stamps Exhibition at the City Hall. In 2007, we organised a 10th
anniversary of the HKSAR stamp exhibition in February. The Philatelic Society also
participates in joint/invitation stamp exhibitions such as in China and Macau regularly.
We organise annual
national exhibitions to qualify new exhibits formed by local collectors for future
FIAP & FIP exhibitions. The Christopher D'Almada trophy, in
memory of our former President, is the Grand Prize for the Hong Kong Stampex exhibitions.
Member countries in FIAP are often invited to compete at our Hong Kong Stampex
exhibitions.
We organised the first
national stamp exhibition in 1994, the first international stamp exhibition in February
1997 and the 15th FIAP Asian International in February 2001. In January 2004, the Society
co-organised the Hong Kong 2004 Stamp Expo - 17th Asian International Philatelic
Exhibition which was a big success. We are proud to announce that our Philatelic Society
will be organising the next international philatelic event in Hong Kong - The Hong Kong
2009 Stamp Expo - 23rd Asian International Philatelic Exhibition under the patronage of
FIAP and sponsorship of Hongkong Post. This is to be held from 14 - 17 May 2009 at
the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Wanchai. |
